REQUIREMENTS

• University degree or combination of experience and education
• 8-10 years underwriting experience at a senior level
• CIP required, FCIP preferred
• Prior experience in management of staff preferred
• Must exhibit a sound knowledge of all commercial lines insurance which the Company writes.
• Must possess knowledge of competitor activity through participation in and cultivation of intra-industry group/contacts.
• Must demonstrate the ability to develop, mentor, and train staff.
• Must possess excellent people skills to manage staff.
• Must possess the ability to negotiate and sell effectively with brokers.
• Prior experience in a management or supervisory role preferred.
• Must have a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record since this role will involve occasional travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directs the branch's commercial lines Property and Casualty underwriting function and achieves a profitable portfolio of business by planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and auditing the development of Property and Casualty commercial lines business in accordance with Company practices, rates, and philosophy.

Manages the branch's P & C commercial lines portfolio to achieve profitability and growth through underwriting. Ensures adherence to corporate underwriting standards and procedures. Develops, implements, and monitors territory premiums, losses, and direct expense targets as outlined in goal documents.

Directs resources to ensure efficient and effective administration of the department and quality customer service. Determines and/or establishes key measures to monitor productivity and technical quality, identify opportunities for improvement, and enhance essential business processes. Develops new or revises operational procedures. Responds to operational problems/issues. Establishes and maintains service levels by organizing and/or monitoring work flow and setting priorities to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity

Determines goals and objectives for direct reports; assigns responsibilities; provides guidance and feedback regarding performance; facilitates continuous learning, career development, and succession planning. Manages the commercial lines department by recruiting qualified employees; coaching, mentoring, and providing training and development opportunities for staff; setting and monitoring goals and objectives; evaluating and correcting performance; and continuously keeping them informed of changes and new directions.

Acts as the Branch's underwriting authority on issues related to risk pricing, selection, and retention governed by the parameters of the corporate underwriting philosophy. Coaches underwriters on complex and exceptional risks and approves over line risks from reporting staff. Assists staff with complex and problem files requiring authorization.

Functions as a key relationship manager with the branch's brokers with respect to the P & C C/L book of business. Develops and manages effective working relationships with brokers, including product presentations. Conducts broker audits, reviews potential portfolio transfers and acquisitions, and takes appropriate action. Creates and develops new business opportunities within the broker plant.

Assists in the preparation of Branch budgets, production reports, as well as sales and profitability plans. Manages and controls the department's operating and administrative expenses within budget allocation.

Liaises with other Commercial Lines managers, Claims Management, and Corporate departments on technical and administrative issues.
Analyzes trends and recommends and leads implementation of changes in rates and/or underwriting practices and procedures to branch and senior underwriting management.

Maintains ongoing communication with insurance community to remain current with competition and on technical developments. Recognizes general market trends affecting business and makes recommendations to maintain competitiveness.

Conducts quarterly audit process to verify soundness of underwriting practices and risk selection, and to identify areas for potential improvement. Monitors compliance with recommendations.
